No More Computer Disasters.....

Don't know about your classroom but I have an issue with kiddos forgetting to plug their computers in after using them. If by chance they do remember to plug them in the cords are so tangled that they have the wrong cord so it doesn't reach the correct computer.  Then you have to go through and untangle the huge Christmas light ball of cords. Ugh! Always a mess.  So a neighbor teacher came up with this FABULOUS idea.  So simple its one of those things that you hit yourself over the head and think, "Why didn't I think of that......"  Any who, I followed her example (Thanks Mrs. Brown!) bought two dish racks and color coordinated all of the cords and computers.  Follow the steps below if you are interested in trying this out for yourself:

1. Purchase dish racks.  (I got mine at Walmart for 4.77 a piece.)

2. Begin to wrap the cords from the back up and around the white metal dish holders on the racks.  Be sure to leave enough cord hanging out the front for the kiddos to be able to plug in the computers.

3.  Use permanent marker (don't worry it does come off with a Magic Eraser) and draw a shape in a certain color on the cord plug and the computer itself.  (I used a purple circle on this one. I happened to have enough different sharpie colors to make them all circles.  However if you do not have enough different colors, you can always do different shapes and colors.)

4.  Finally set them all in the dish rack and explain to the kiddos that when they bring a computer back they need to match the cord with the correct computer.

And viola!!! NO more messy cords!
Do you have any quick and easy ideas to keep your computer area in order?? I would love to hear about them!

Pizza Boxes

I was trying to think of something for my kiddos to do at Open House night that would give them a since of belonging in the class.  I usually do the typical Scavenger Hunt, family picture type stuff, but really wanted something different this year.  I started thinking about storage space for all our crafty lessons.  In Science and Social Studies we create a lot of great stuff.  We also take notes and observe using Journals.  I have had trouble storing all of these "tools" together.  This year I decided to use Pizza boxes to store our experiments, projects, and journals that we are working on.  They turned out super cute!

First I spray painted the outside of the boxes black:

Then I folded all of them up.  I found these great foam space stickers from Michaels.  Then on Open House Night (Meet The Teacher Night) I let the kiddos pick 4-6 big stickers and 2-3 small stickers to put around the outside of their box.  (While they decorated I was able to talk to parents!!)

You can see through my example but the rest of the boxes are completely covered.  (I just was running out of paint and didn't want to get more for only 1 box.)

The kids had a lot of fun with this.

Do you have any other activities you do at Open House?  I would love to hear them!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Is it going to be you??? I have something HUGE planned coming soon!  I promise you will NOT be disappointed! Check back on August 8th to find out what it is!!!!

On another note, I just wanted to share one of my favorite center ideas!  I wrote a grant a few years ago for more technology in my classroom.  I was able to get 4 Tag Readers and over 40 different titles to go with them!  These Tag readers are FABULOUS!!! The kiddos love going to them.  IF you have a chance to get some of these in your classroom you should.  The kids LOVE all of the titles and learn so many things while using them. (One to one, phonics, picture clues, stretching sounds, and much more.) It has been worth every penny!

Do you have an extra special center that you have found to work really well in your classroom?  I would love to hear about it!
